"The Final March Thaw"

"Final March Thaw"  Oil, 18" x 24"  $975 framed

2014 has been such a cold, cold winter, but in March we could feel spring in the air.  This is a favorite creek of mine just west of Brookston.  This same view was the subject for one of my 12" x 16" winter paintings, "Snowy Marsh".  What a difference a month makes.  With warmer weather comes fog and misty, cloudy days, so subtly beautiful.

Now, in the middle of April, I'm putting my paints and brushes into a backpack to go painting plein air.  We could still get a snow, but not likely.

The Indiana Artists Club is now having its annual juried exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The juror was the new IMA Director, Dr. Charles Venable.  With just 44 chosen from about 150, I am happy to have "Snow Fence" hanging in that exhibit.  The Awards Reception will be April 27th at 2pm.  If you can, please come to see the paintings and enjoy the refreshments.   It will be up through June 8th.

Thank you for being interested in my painting life, and please share this with your friends who may also enjoy  it.  And you know your comments are always nice to receive.

"February 6PM"

"February 6PM" is the fourth and last of this series of snow oil paintings, all 12" x 16".   One very late afternoon as I was painting in my studio, I happened to look out the window and saw this amazing light.  The sky was very cloudy until it reached the western horizon where it became completely clear, letting the intense setting sun rake across the landscape, bounce off the clouds, and hit our neighbor's farm house and trees.  I grabbed my camera to record the light.

"Snow Fence"

We had a couple of days of warmer weather, in the high 30's, so I thought that winter might be coming to an end.  Then I saw the forecast for this week:   1F for a low tomorrow and 5F for the next three days.  Guess I don't need to worry about the snow completely melting any time soon.  I meant to post the next "winter" painting right after the last one, but our internet connection went down on Friday morning (naturally) with no hope of a fix until today.  So I had a quiet weekend of reading a book on old fashioned "paper".

"Snow Fence"  12" x 16", oil on canvas panel, $800 framed

Snow shadows offer wonderful blues and purples, reflecting the sky as they do.  This broken down farm fence with the brush created a a nice drift and an opportunity to paint mainly snow, warm in the sun and cool in the shade.  What fun!

Thanks for your emails and, if you have friends who might like to see my paintings,  please pass this blog on to them.  All my best wishes to you, and I'll try to keep on painting.

"Snowy Marsh"

"Snowy Marsh"  12"x 16", oil on canvas panel,  $800 framed

This is the second of four winter paintings I've completed in four weeks of very cold and snowy weather.  It's been an absolutely beautiful winter season!   It's a scene of a completely covered snowy marsh creek basin that flows northwest from Moot's Creek which is just west of Brookston.   The temp was about 5F so I intentionally drove out to this spot which I thought might be "good", jumped out of my car in the late afternoon with a setting sun, took several photo references, and choobled back to my warm studio.  For the painters who are reading this, I loved painting it on a Raymar canvas panel that was half flax and half cotton (They call it a "smooth cotton" for portraits, but it's actually half flax which is why I like it.)  There are two more winter paintings in this series which I'll post in the next few days, but I want you to see them one at a time so each can stand on its own.

Thanks so much for your emails.  It's great to hear from you, and thank you for viewing my painting.

January Thaw

"January Thaw"  12" x 16", Oil on linen panel,  $800 framed  © K.H. Clark

Goodness, it's been so long since I sent out a blog that I bet you've about given up on me ever sending one again.  Well, I want to change my ways and post new paintings as they're finished.  I know I have some catching up to do, but will begin with some new ones.

It's been a cold, cold winter as you probably are well aware of if you live east of the Rockies.  A snowy winter presents many beautiful colors and light in the landscape.  This painting is of Moot's Creek, just west of Brookston, IN.  It was completely frozen with a full cover of snow until the January thaw melted the huge drift and allowed the creek to flow some.   The setting sun created the "wow" effect on that drift about 5pm one day.   I took a photo reference and painted it in my warm studio which was a delight!

Remember, I always love to hear from you.   Stay warm!
