<div style="text-align: left;">
As the 1950's and 60's cars are so pervasive in Cuba, I thought I should at least paint a couple before I ended my Cuban Series. This East German side-car was just parked on a street full of groceries (as in Europe, side-cars double as a poor man's back seat of a sedan). Then, I wanted to paint a scene with a 1952 Chevy that I just loved. We were waiting for part of our group of painters to tour the cigar factory, so I wandered and found this side street with a great composition and a wonderful old car. The sliding factory door added an abstract element to the texture of decay that pervaded the side street. </div>

In the center of this, tiny, magical, 19th century town is Sara's Cafe. This year, because my husband plays banjo and likes to jam with others, we (rather he) gravitated to the side of Sara's Cafe under a large porch (in case of rain). Although I normally paint standing, I decided to get really comfortable and sit. And boy! was I glad I did because the reflections of the sky and the buildings across the street in Sara's front doors were such fun to paint! Of course another added benefit was the fancy coffees and sandwiches, with a Wine Bar next door to celebrate a finished painting!</span></div>

Earlier this year, my husband and I joined the group of painters that Eric Rhodes, publisher of Plein Air Magazine, took to Cuba for a trip of a lifetime! We've always been interested in Cuba, having lived during the rein of the dictator Batista, the subsequent Castro revolution, and the American embargo. The Cuban people are amazingly resilient, having been ruled by one dictator after another beginning with the Spanish. Unfortunately, the 50 year American Embargo has forced Cuba into a devastating economic isolation which has had many harsh consequences for the Cuban people like the food supply and repairing their architecture. However, unintended consequences have made Cuba famous for the ubiquitous and lovingly preserved Classic Cars of the 1950's and 60's.<br />

The Cuban people are exceedingly friendly and seem very happy. This woman in my painting is relaxing on a Sunday afternoon on her second story porch in old Havana,looking down on a beautiful tree lined boulevard called the Prado, filled with tourists. My husband, Howie, is a musician and took his banjo so music was a very important component for both of us on this trip. The local musicians invited us (I played spoons) to play with them at every turn--which made the trip very special indeed.</div>

Our Plein Air group consisted of seventy painters and thirty spouses, the big group was then divided into three smaller groups of 33 whom we usually traveled and ate with. We all ate breakfast together in the hotel. Then each group was dropped off in one location of Old Havana in the morning to wander and paint whatever struck or fancy, then together again for lunch in a local restaurant, and painting in a different location in the afternoon. If we wanted to go somewhere else on our own, we could take a taxi back to the hotel. We were like kids in a candy store, only candy for the eyes. Old Havana felt a little like Venice or maybe old Barcelona, with its Spanish Colonial architecture. The group also got to enjoy the Cuban Art Museum with a very informative talk of important Cuban artists and their expressive paintings relating to Cuban history.<br />
<br />
During the week, we traveled out of Havana, along the coast to Cojimar, Hemingway's home, and further into the countryside to a Spanish Sugar Plantation ruin where we loved painting the ancient house, bell tower, and stone walls. The main house was in the process of being conserved. To keep my backpack as light as possible, I took Twinrocker paper, drawing sketches and painting watercolors, and of course lots of photos to use later in my studio for oils. Here are some pics:<br />

Well, I hope this has given you a taste of Cuba and our painting trip. I drew other sketches and painted 5 studio oils after I returned while playing the Cuban CDs we purchased from the small three and four piece bands we heard in the restaurants. You can see all of those Cuban paintings and drawings on my web site. <a href="http://kathrynclarkfineart.com/">www.kathrynclarkfineart.com</a> Also, my current website Newsletter which has completely different photos of Cuba, and all my Studio oils of Cuba can be seen by clicking on "Newsletter" on the home page, then "Archive". Enjoy!</div>

For those of you who are within driving distance of Lafayette, Indiana, I'm going to give an evening program "Painting Cuba" at the Lafayette Art Museum on Tuesday, May 17th from 7-8:30pm with Howie's help. There'll be photos of Cuba, with those CDs playing in the background, all the sketches, watercolors, and the five studio oil paintings. Also, I am honored that the "Cuban Lady" was accepted in the soon-to-open INDIANA NOW juried exhibition at the Lafayette Art Museum which will be on display all summer. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
As we looked at the huge cliff in front of us, my cousin thought he saw a tiny blue speck about half way up the mountain. Another cousin, a birder, had his handy telescope with him so we tried to see if there were climbers on the rock face. Yes, indeed there were! Then I zoomed my brand new Panasonic camera to the full 60X and WOW! I could see the climbers through my camera lens. So this studio oil was painted from my photo reference. There were two climbers, and this guy was trying to make his way to his partner who was at the other end of these ropes. Didn't want to look too long in case, you know, there was an accident. </div>

While living in San Francisco from 1969-1972, we unfortunately never had the time or money to go to Yosemite so I was quite excited to be able to finally see and experience the amazing cliffs and waterfalls. If you should have the opportunity to go, be sure to jump at it!</div>

Thank you for patiently waiting all these months for another blog. After I finished these paintings, my studio was under construction for five months, having a wall built to replace an old garage door, six additional windows, and the outside replaced with siding. Consequently, I was not painting for many, many weeks. If you know others who would enjoy this blog, please forward it to them. You can see these and other paintings on my web site at <a href="http://www.kathrynclarkfineart.com/">www.kathrynclarkfineart.com</a>. </div>

Needless to say, I've regretted that we didn't somehow make the journey. Finally this summer we had the opportunity to go with my cousin, a geologist for the National Geological Survey, as our guide. As he studied this cliff, he noticed a tiny blue speck and concluded there were climbers waaaay up there, about half way to the top. With my 60X zoom camera, I got this shot of one of the pair. Just being on a tall ladder makes me nervous....<br />

We stayed at Curry Village, a grouping of about two hundred canvas tents on wooden bases, which gave us the true camping experience, complete with a bear box to keep anything a bear might like tucked away in a steel container by the door of the tent. I have yet to paint the exciting scenes in Yosemite itself, but I did complete three paintings of the days before going to Yosemite. One day we drove down the coast from San Francisco to Half Moon Bay, and I took a photo reference of the soft mist pouring in between the coastal ridges. The next day we made our way toward Yosemite seeing gorgeous rock outcroppings. We were getting close!</div>

(raised copper bowl from one sheet of copper with gold leaf interior and silver rim, and amazing surface relief)</div>
<br />
It was the largest exhibition that I have ever juried. Here is a photo of a few of the entries hanging back to back and belly to belly, floor to ceiling. 409 artists submitted 725 entries (a record number!) However, it was an ideal situation for jurying because we could see all the actual art works with none hiding in stacks as is often the case. As pieces were eliminated, the museum staff moved the ones near the ceiling down to our eye level so we could see them in an ideal setting. It was a thrill to see so many beautiful works of art in all media including painting in oil, watercolor, and acrylic, pastel, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, fiber, photography, sculpture, encaustic, metal, and jewelry, basically any media, so pardon the odd angles and glare from the lights on the glass. Having experience with almost every media helped me judge the craftsmanship of the works. My undergrad major was in ceramics, graduate major in printmaking, then I exhibited art works in paper pulp, drawing, photography, watercolor and oil. We spent two full days choosing the exhibition. The staff said that we had probably eliminated enough by the end of the first day, and we were very happy with the exhibition as it stood. Then the next morning the Museum Curator told us that we would have to eliminate at least 50 more. Yeow!! What a shock that was! So now, when painting friends, or I, get "rejected" from an exhibition, I can certainly understand that it often comes down to the space available in the gallery. Finally, we had them set aside our favorite art works in order to choose the Awards, not thinking about the media. But we were happily surprised that those art works included almost every media. Here are some of them which I photographed with my Ipad as we looked at them.</div>

Now you can see what a thrill it was for us to see these beautiful art works "in the flesh!" I was also asked to jury the Illinois State Fair's Professional Division for this years exhibition and awards, but the submissions were entered over the internet on digital files via a Juried Exhibitions Company. It was so difficult to see the art works on a computer, even on a large screen which I have. It is soooo much better to drive the actual art work to the exhibition site so the juror can see the real thing! I know how much extra work it is for both the artists and the venue, but it is completely worth it in order to choose the best pieces. After selecting that exhibition digitally, I will go to Springfield to see the actual art works in order to give the awards. </div>

As you can see, June was a very interesting month! If you can get to Muskegon to see this exhibition before August 6th, , I think you'll find the trip well worth it. Thank you for our interest in these musings, and please forward this to all your friends who might be interested. And you know that I always enjoy hearing from you. <a href="http://www.kathrynclarkfineart.com/">www.kathrynclarkfineart.com</a> </div>

During the month of June, from June 2 -- June 30, about twenty-five of my oil paintings will be featured at the Brown County Art Guild in Nashville, IN. Nashville is a quaint, tourist destination in the southern Indiana hills, and with The Guild, it was the hub of the famous Indiana Hoosier Group of painters at the turn of the nineteenth century. The Guild is dedicated to preserving the paintings of Marie Goth and others from that group. Membership in the Guild is determined by the members themselves. I'm proud to be a member and support this mission.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Opening for this exhibition will be this coming Saturday, June 13th, from 5-8 pm. The Guild is located at 48 South Van Buren, Nashville, IN 47488. Other contact information: phone 812-988-6185, <a href="http://www.browncountyartguild.org/">www.browncountyartguild.org</a>. I hope you can come to see my paintings this month and enjoy all the other shops and galleries in Nashville while you're there. </div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In anticipation of the PGA Senior Championships at the new Pete Dye designed golf course at the French Lick Resort, a friend and I spent two days painting there. We soaked up the gorgeous,</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> wooded vistas of Southern Indiana from the spectacular layout. Pete Dye created the jaw dropping views by removing hundreds of trees from the second highest spot in Indiana and carving out, he says, "his best inland course". <a href="https://www.frenchlick.com/golf/petedye">https://www.frenchlick.com/golf/petedye</a> For all you golfers, don't miss the Senior Championship tournament. The tickets range from $15-$35. Here's the scoop: <a href="http://www.pga.com/seniorpga/">http://www.pga.com/seniorpga/</a></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Indiana Plein Air Painters were invited to create paintings of the course with vistas. We'll have our paintings on display and for sale during the Championships and thru the summer at the Historic West Baden Springs Hotel with it's huge, interior dome. This not-to-be-missed hotel is part of the French Lick Resort and is connected to the French Lick Casino by an antique trolley.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span></div>

I've been posting most of my new paintings in the E-Mail Newsletter on my web site and got tired of writing much the same thing on my blog. So, I encourage you to <b>go to my web site and sign up to receive my E-mail Newsletter</b>. The web site is <a href="http://www.kathrynclarkfineart.com/">www.kathrynclarkfineart.com</a> On the Home Page, just put your email in the box (Join my e-mail list). I'll try to post new paintings, exhibitions, etc in my web site Newsletter, and more informal, chatty conversation and things in my blog, probably not as often. If you click on "E-mail Newsletter on the Home page, you can sign up there too and also see Past Newsletters.<br />
<br />
I've been painting representational images in oil since 2008 when I retired from making handmade artist papers at Twinrocker. Before then, I was creating abstract images using paper pulp with hand papermaking techniques that I developed and then drawing on the dry handmade paper. During the past six years, I've enjoyed using my eyes to interpret the beautiful landscape around me and learning the craft of painting in oil. However, I've slowly missed using my imagination and finding out what images are in there. So I've decided to begin creating abstract images from my imagination in watercolor. I know this will be a big shock to all the people who think of me as a representational painter, but, going forward, I want to paint BOTH representational and imaginative imagery. Please let me know how you like them. For many years, in my past "abstract" life, I was interested in exploring the illusion of space, deep space, distorted architectural space, and movement through space. Now I'm trying to see how these visual interests can be expressed in watercolor rather than paper pulp. Here are two of the first three:<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I may only post the new abstract watercolors on this Blog and not in my website E-Mail Newsletter because it might be too confusing for my collectors. What do you think? Should I keep the two different types of imagery separate? I'd appreciate your advice. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Thank you for viewing this blog and for your past comments and support. Remember to sign up for my E-Mail Newsletter on my web site, and I'll try to post on this blog a little more frequently than once every six months. ---- All the best, Kathryn</div>

2014 has been such a cold, cold winter, but in March we could feel spring in the air. This is a favorite creek of mine just west of Brookston. This same view was the subject for one of my 12" x 16" winter paintings, "Snowy Marsh". What a difference a month makes. With warmer weather comes fog and misty, cloudy days, so subtly beautiful. </div>

One very late afternoon as I was painting in my studio, I happened to look out the window and saw this amazing light. The sky was very cloudy until it reached the western horizon where it became completely clear, letting the intense setting sun rake across the landscape, bounce off the clouds, and hit our neighbor's farm house and trees. I grabbed my camera to record the light. <div>

Then I saw the forecast for this week: 1F for a low tomorrow and 5F for the next three days. Guess I don't need to worry about the snow completely melting any time soon. I meant to post the next "winter" painting right after the last one, but our internet connection went down on Friday morning (naturally) with no hope of a fix until today. So I had a quiet weekend of reading a book on old fashioned "paper". <br />

Snow shadows offer wonderful blues and purples, reflecting the sky as they do. This broken down farm fence with the brush created a a nice drift and an opportunity to paint mainly snow, warm in the sun and cool in the shade. What fun!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the second of four winter paintings I've completed in four weeks of very cold and snowy weather. It's been an absolutely beautiful winter season! It's a scene of a completely covered snowy marsh creek basin that flows northwest from Moot's Creek which is just west of Brookston. The temp was about 5F so I intentionally drove out to this spot which I thought might be "good", jumped out of my car in the late afternoon with a setting sun, took several photo references, and choobled back to my warm studio. For the painters who are reading this, I loved painting it on a Raymar canvas panel that was half flax and half cotton (They call it a "smooth cotton" for portraits, but it's actually half flax which is why I like it.) There are two more winter paintings in this series which I'll post in the next few days, but I want you to see them one at a time so each can stand on its own. </div>

Goodness, it's been so long since I sent out a blog that I bet you've about given up on me ever sending one again. Well, I want to change my ways and post new paintings as they're finished. I know I have some catching up to do, but will begin with some new ones.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's been a cold, cold winter as you probably are well aware of if you live east of the Rockies. A snowy winter presents many beautiful colors and light in the landscape. This painting is of Moot's Creek, just west of Brookston, IN. It was completely frozen with a full cover of snow until the January thaw melted the huge drift and allowed the creek to flow some. The setting sun created the "wow" effect on that drift about 5pm one day. I took a photo reference and painted it in my warm studio which was a delight!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Remember, I always love to hear from you. Stay warm!</div>

The publisher of Fine Art Connoisseur and Plein Air Magazines, Eric Rhodes, hosted his "Publisher's Invitational" with 100 artists painting the beautiful landscape for a week in late June. I met my painting sister, Peg, who lives in Oregon and an artist friend there, and we had a ball with all the other painters from all over the country. We stayed at Paul Smith College on St. Regis Lake, making day trips to lakes, rivers, and vistas. The following two paintings are the lake from the deck of the college.<br />

With heavy rains all spring, the pounding and roaring of the falls was so exciting. I wanted to capture the force of that river. This was the last painting of the trip and what a way to end it! All of these paintings are now on display at the Brown County Art Guild in Nashville, IN through the fall. <a href="http://browncountyartguild.org/">Browncountyartguild.org</a> If you want to inquire or comment on these paintings, you can email me at kclark@twinrocker.com, and you can see all of my paintings on my web site <a href="http://kathrynclarkfineart.com/">http://kathrynclarkfineart.com/</a>. For the last two months, a major focus of my oil painting has been the Tippecanoe County Courthouse in Lafayette, IN. This is because the Indiana Bar Association in Indianapolis is building a collection of paintings representing all the 92 county courthouses in Indiana. At the beginning of this year, the Tippecanoe Bar Assoc. sponsored a competition titled "under the Dome" to choose a painting that will represent the Tippecanoe Co. Courthouse. The judging occurred at the beginning of April. The painting above was my first attempt to represent this complicated architectural style. It represents the corner of the building and the second floor because I wanted to feature the dome in this view. Although only one painting would be chosen as the winner of the contest, all the paintings were for sale and are on display for the month of May in the courthouse. A third of the selling price was a fund raiser for CASA for Kids and the Tippecanoe Co. Legal Aid Corp.</div>

On March 6th, nature dumped on us with a big, beautiful, wet snow. I'd already finished two paintings of the courthouse, but this statue of Lafayette on the corner of the building's grounds was stunning! Normally in the winter with no water in the fountain, it is drab and nothing to look at, but not on this day! What fun I had painting it!! </div>

After I successfully completed the first painting of the courthouse, I felt I could tackle the entire building from Columbia Street with a larger canvas. Just the second floor and dome would not do for the official representation for the Indiana Bar Association's collection. This was the third courthouse for Tippecanoe county, built in 1880, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. I was thrilled to be the winner, receive the $1000 purchase prize, and have the honor of having my painting be permanently installed at the Indiana Bar Association's Headquarters in the Capitol Building in Indianapolis. </div>

This event was very challenging for me as it was the first time I had painted an architectural portrait. Competitions like this push an artist way out of her comfort zone and offer a major learning experience. I enjoyed it very much. If you'd like to see these and other paintings on my web site, here is the link: <a href="http://www.kathrynclarkfineart.com/">www.kathrynclarkfineart.com</a>, and please forward this to others who may be interested. <div style="text-align: left;">
As the weather finally gets a little warmer, and the snowdrops start blooming, painters begin to get an itch to leave their studios and paint in the fresh air of nature. The first outdoor painting event for the Indiana Plein Air Painters is always a great one down in the tip of the boot of Indiana at New Harmony. It takes place from April 18--20th and includes prizes for the painters and a large SALE of paintings for collectors and the general public. Over a hundred painters from all over the Midwest participate. Please join us!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
One of the events is the "Field to Finish" in which artists paint a small field study during the three day event, not bigger than 12" in the longest direction. Then, during the year, we paint a larger "finished" studio painting. Both the field study and the finished painting are exhibited at the next April paint-out, called The First Blush of Spring. That exhibit at the New Harmony Hoosier Salon is juried for prizes. Last year my paintings were the judges favorites, so we'll see how these two do this year. Here is my finished studio painting of the pond.</div>

Let me encourage you to join us this year. People are welcome to wander and look over the shoulders of dozens of painters, ask us questions, and snap up a painting off someone's easel or attend the painting sale in which we bring both studio and plein air framed paintings. There's delicious meals at the Red Geranium and other local restaurants. If you'd like more information on the event and accommodations, call Maggie Rapp at the Hoosier Salon New Harmony Gallery, 812-682-3970, hoosiersalon@sbcglobal.net, 507 Church Street, New Harmony, IN 47631.</div>

Now that the Holidays are almost here, it seems like a good time to reflect on this past year and to show you the paintings I've completed since October. After a wonderful year full of travel and plein air painting in New Harmony, IN, Winter Park, CO, at the Dunes of Lake Michigan, by Lake Wawasee in mid-north IN, and at the Brookville home of T.C.Steele. Now I find the cozy fire in my studio wood stove a delight and am enjoying settling down to dig into some larger paintings. This is the first one larger than 11"x 14" which was completed this week. </div>

Thinking backwards, before I got back into my studio for the winter, my husband, Howie, and I had a great time at the IPAPA Brookville, IN Paint-Out in southwestern Indiana. Of course Howie had his guitar and banjo with him. Two of the famous artists in the Indiana Hoosier Group, T.C.Steele and Otis Adams shared a large home in Brookville with their families, dividing the house in half with a large studio for each painter at the far ends. It's now a bed and breakfast with many of the original artifacts and furniture so we love to stay there. This year the weather was cold and rainy which could have been a bummer, but after painting outside the first chilly day, all the artists staying in the house painted in Otis Adams big studio the second day for a very fun time. It felt like we were back in 1910.</div>

In Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, we say we have an inland ocean because the expanse of the waters of the Great Lakes is so vast. Having lived on the coast of California, I can attest to the similarity of the two. Indiana just gets the tip of Lake Michigan, but we love and appreciate every bit of it. One of the most beautiful and compelling aspects of the lake is the mountains of dunes. In early September, I spent three days painting plein air there with two friends and staying at another friends beach house in Beverly Shores, IN. The first painting above was painted the first afternoon as the sun was beginning to set. I just fell in love with the color of the sand as the setting sun was reflected on it.<br />

The storm blew through that night, and the next day it was hot and beautiful. Standing in the shade of the trees along the shore, the breeze was so delightful I wanted to stay another day or two, but we had to get home. It's been fun to schlep my painting gear to Colorado and the National Lake Shore of Indiana. The fall is always beautiful in Indiana so I'm looking forward to painting nature's colorful pallet in the hills of southern Indiana in Brookville next. </div>

<br />
September 5th, a friend and I flew to Winter Park, Colorado to paint the inspiring mountain landscapes there and in the Rocky Mountain National Park. I hadn't seen the Rocky Mountains in many, many years. We had planned four days of painting, hopefully two plein air paintings per day. We might have met that challenge except for the great time spent with two painter friends on two of those marvelous days. Even with spending many hours driving through such beautiful country, I did manage to paint six plein air studies. Being an Indiana sea-level, prairie, farm, and woodland person, I was constantly saying "Wow!! look at that!!", the color of the mountains, cliffs, sky, sunset, aspens, pine forests, and streams. It was so exciting! <br />

You may have noticed that I said I painted six panels, but I only have five here. Actually, I must confess that the one of the rocky stream you see me standing beside was a "scaper", as painters say, just not worth finishing. So there you have it....what a grand time one can have out in the landscape, in the fresh air and warm sun! Now I'm eager to go off again to a new place and find out what will appear on my canvas. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The Hotel at Fountain Park Chautauqua</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For the past two weeks I've been teaching painting at the Fountain Park Chautauqua in Remington, Indiana, and it truly was like stepping back in time. It was founded in 1895 and has had families come for camaraderie and learning continuously since then, even during the depression and the wars. There are only two others still in existence, the original in Chautauqua, NY being one of them, and Lakeside, OH the other. Unlike the original one in New York which is very huge with internationally known speakers and a constantly changing audience, Fountain Park is almost exactly like it was 100 years ago but without the horses and buggies, and with indoor plumbing and electricity, but no air conditioning or TV. (The original Chautauqua in NY was founded by the Methodist Church to teach Sunday School teachers.) Around the hotel, there is a huge circle of cabins which were built and owned by each family. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggmSjRzmihnC2AuTgw58E84muhuZ55NjAQaUvFT7fgpAsNRGuBza3Fu3H_SJBfT4jV8v9SgRQ3Bj6ZRUWVN2RjImRvm0nMHztKKiigHQZ0fFouepsGd-_ZXTo6IQ7kk1LkVBUOreZWh-h_/s1600/FtnPkCabinsWeb9689.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="185" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggmSjRzmihnC2AuTgw58E84muhuZ55NjAQaUvFT7fgpAsNRGuBza3Fu3H_SJBfT4jV8v9SgRQ3Bj6ZRUWVN2RjImRvm0nMHztKKiigHQZ0fFouepsGd-_ZXTo6IQ7kk1LkVBUOreZWh-h_/s320/FtnPkCabinsWeb9689.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So the people at Fountain Park were born into families who owned a cabin, grew up there during the summer, sometimes met their spouses there, and raised their children. Today it's a "no growth" community. Because there's no more land on which to build cabins, many people have built up, creating a second story for the grand children and others. However, there is enough land for some campers and tents. Here is a link to its history: <a href="http://www.fountain-park.org/ABOUTAboutUs.htm">http://www.fountain-park.org/ABOUTAboutUs.htm</a> As with the first Chautauqua, music and lectures are very important along with games and art. Here's the building for lectures and music with it's open sides and very old theater seats.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ3GP6k1X2cc1LUIdlPxIJbpSmeM63LzBL4TbGj1V3HXxrTYeSU0uxN6iVXwPTt-vX5ap0oaN2u3HNck2mKGZE5d7eYQLV29G2p9OCpkr5GHAHo2pLjU5gmI6FIYzvrdhH_6BIyYO94sTE/s1600/FtnPkBandStndWeb9646.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ3GP6k1X2cc1LUIdlPxIJbpSmeM63LzBL4TbGj1V3HXxrTYeSU0uxN6iVXwPTt-vX5ap0oaN2u3HNck2mKGZE5d7eYQLV29G2p9OCpkr5GHAHo2pLjU5gmI6FIYzvrdhH_6BIyYO94sTE/s320/FtnPkBandStndWeb9646.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A woman named Mrs. Ethel Lough started to teach painting in 1938, and they painted under the trees until 1943 when a small building was offered to house an "art colony". Now they have a much larger metal building with two wings, one for teaching painting to adults and the other for children to paint and for women to use for quilting. Here's my class:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYvStIZRPlGUHgMHvvQM_cvMI_N4kImBeplrsl4bsUiwU42F7PZ50L1uvEkmiSq9e_rJKv_QIHQ1yShAT5u0EegNxJ7HaKvhDO2M64zr5u6TynOvyW7j6R7PD5HFGBZUeBopL0A74WzYk7/s1600/FtnPkClassWeb9691.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYvStIZRPlGUHgMHvvQM_cvMI_N4kImBeplrsl4bsUiwU42F7PZ50L1uvEkmiSq9e_rJKv_QIHQ1yShAT5u0EegNxJ7HaKvhDO2M64zr5u6TynOvyW7j6R7PD5HFGBZUeBopL0A74WzYk7/s320/FtnPkClassWeb9691.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To raise money for equipment for the "art colony", Mrs. Lough would offer a painting each year to be raffled at the end of the main two weeks of entertainment, classes, and lectures. This tradition continues so I painted the hotel as I demonstrated the oil painting process to the art colony.</div>

The Fountain Park Chautauqua is truly a unique and almost a secret place as many people in Indiana don't know it exists. However, the families are very welcoming to visitors who can come to see the entertainment and hear the lectures, paint in the art colony, and stay in the hotel, all meals included. It's not surprising that it's on the National Historical Register and is truly a living history. It was a privilege to teach there. </div>

"Peony Garden", New Harmony, IN 9" x 12" plein air oil on canvas panel</div>
<br />
I see that I've been very negligent about sending blogs this spring with new paintings, so I'll try to catch up with all the new paintings by sending several blogs in a row. The first plein air painting event in Indiana each year is the April paint-out in New Harmony, the historic village at the tip of the boot of Indiana near the Wabash and the Ohio River. As I've said in other years, it was where the <span style="background-color: white;">Utopian,</span><span style="background-color: white;"> Rappite </span><span style="background-color: white;">community</span><span style="background-color: white;"> founded the first kindergarten and public library. It then was purchased by the Owen family who were intellectuals, explorers, and geologists who consequently founded the National Geological Survey there. Carl Bodmer was the fabulous artist who documented the flora and </span><span style="background-color: white;">fauna with </span><span style="background-color: white;">Maximilian as they explored westward from New Harmony.</span><span style="background-color: white;"> Quite an impressive legacy for a tiny village. With the </span><span style="background-color: white;">wonderful</span><span style="background-color: white;"> philanthropy of Jane Owen, who just died at about 97 years, the village has been restored. If you should be traveling through Kentucky or Indiana, it's certainly worth a side trip. <a href="http://maxkade.iupui.edu/newharmony/home.html">http://maxkade.iupui.edu/newharmony/home.html</a></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
"Peony Garden" was painted at the edge of town in a commercial peony garden. The peonies are picked by hand just as they're about to bloom and then shipped by air, overnight Federal Express, to customers all over the United States and further. Most of the painters didn't know there is a peony garden because normally they don't flower in April. This has been such a warm year that all plantings were a month a head.<br />
<br />
Each year at this Indiana Plein Air Painters event, there is a <i>"Field to Finish" </i>competition. During the paint-out, artists paint a<i> field study</i> not larger than 9" x 12". Then during the year, they paint a <i>finished</i> painting that can be up to 18" x 24". This was the first year that I entered that competition, and I was happy to be one of the winners, with my paintings being the judges favorites. Here they are:<br />

Over one hundred painters painted together this year from all over the Midwest and beyond. It's quite a fun event. If anyone reading this would like information about the Indiana Plein Air Painters or would like to consider attending the "First Blush of Spring" next April, please contact me or IPAPA. <a href="http://www.inpainters.org/">www.inpainters.org</a></div>

This rich, dark farmland is where I live in middle north Indiana. However, the glaciers ended about fifty miles south of my home in Brookston leaving prehistoric, sedimentary rock formations, much of it limestone. The famous limestone quarries are in Southern Indiana, but some of the most beautiful cliffs and caves are preserved in Turkey Run State Park, northwest of Indianapolis, near Crawfordsville. Today's oil painting is of one of those cliffs with caves large enough to crawl into if we could climb up that high. They were carved by the power of water eons ago, but water continues to shape them little by little.<br />

I'm also very happy to announce that I've been accepted as a Guest Artist with the<i> Brown County Art Guild</i> in the beautiful, southern hills of Nashville, Indiana. This guild was central to the Indiana Impressionist movement at the turn of the century and continues to be a gallery for renown Indiana landscape painters.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div align="justify" style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;">
As early as 1870, artists traveled from far and wide to enjoy the "Peaceful Valley" of Brown County and to capture its beauty on their canvases. Nestled in the hills of Southern Indiana, Nashville was not an easy destination to reach; none the less, these hardy and adventurous artists arrived, worked closely together, and created a great sense of camaraderie. Some were transient, but many remained and made Brown County their home. Those early days were difficult; living conditions were very primitive, but the spirit, principles, and quality of art were soon established and Brown County Indiana quickly became well recognized throughout the United States and Europe as a premiere art colony.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;">The first Brown County art association was incorporated in April, 1925 with Carl Graf (originally from Bedford) as its president. It was the only art association in the county until in 1954, Marie Goth, V. J. Cariani, Carl Graf, Genevieve Goth Graf, Curry Bohm, Dale Bessire, Georges LaChance and other notable artists formed the Brown County Art Guild, Inc. Carl Graf served as the first president of the newly formed art guild.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;"> </span> </div>

Two years ago, the Indiana Plein Air Painters and the Indiana Historical Society came together to create a new book which will highlight important buildings and places in Indiana that need to be preserved. The plein air painters, including me, began painting Indiana architecture two years ago but had to keep those paintings secret, not exhibiting them or publishing them on our web sites until they were judged in the competition to be included in the book. That competition happened last November, and the juror was Stephen Doherty, the editor of the highly regarded <i>Plein Air Magazine</i>. So now I can show you the paintings I did that were NOT included in the book. I submitted six paintings, and three were chosen for inclusion in <i>Painting Indiana III. </i>The three that will be in the book must remain a secret until it is published at the end of this year. All the paintings submitted were required to be painted <i>plein air, </i>that is painted on site, and each artist had to take a photo of herself with the painting and the subject in the image to prove it was painted on site and not in the studio. Many painters succeeded in jumping through all these hoops for the book and Indiana history.<br />

"Rappite House in New Harmony, IN", 11" x 14", oil on canvas panel, $650<br />
<i>New Harmony is the site of two of America's great utopian communities. The first, Harmonie on the Wabash (1814-1824), was founded by the Harmony Society, a group of Separatists from the German Lutheran Church. In 1814, led by their charismatic leader Johann Gorg Rapp, they left their first American home in Harmonie, PA. This new land in Indiana's lower Wabash Valley on the western frontier gave them the opportunity to acquire a much larger tract of land. Their houses are still there. Later, under the direction of the Owen family, this small village was also the site of the first public library and the first kindergarten in America. It has been restored beautifully and is a tourist destination worth the trip. </i><br />

To catch you up, the holidays are always a busy time and therefore not much time for painting. We had a cozy holiday at home over Christmas and the New Year, but then met my twin sister on Big island, Hawaii for our birthday in January. Sorry, no painting, with only a week to explore. I dropped my camera and thought I broke it, as it was jammed, i.e. not working, no more photos of Hawaii. However, after returning home, my local camera store, Barry's in Lafayette, IN, brought it back to life--a little miracle I thought. I'd like to paint an image of the black lava against the ocean, and I did get a couple of photos I could use as a reference, so who knows. There may be a lava painting in my future. Then in February, Howard and I gave a lecture and workshop on hand papermaking at the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, FL., helping them set up a Book Arts Program. So you see this winter has been filled with sun and sand and many amazing people in Sarasota. Along with all that, I started to teach private lessons in oil painting in January which is also taking time away from painting. However, I do have a new painting or two to show you.<br />
